Zones Study post-processing

The Zones Study post-processing feature allows to define several critical zones along a riser such as top section, sag/hog area and touch down point region, and to carry out automated post-processing along these zones for series of different analyses.

All results produced by this automated post-processing feature are grouped into summary results tables showing for instance min/max of selected results.

Note

the Zones Study automated post-processing module may particularly useful to derive extreme loads and cyclic loads as required for extreme and cyclic fatigue analysis of flexible risers.

Results variables that can be processed with the Zones Study include all results related to Line components. Other structural components like Rigid Bodies, Buoys and Floaters cannot be included in Zones Study requests.

Zones Study types

Zones Study requests are split in two types of requests, as follows:

  • Extreme Load Cases: Extreme Case Zone Study is appropriate for any line type (e.g. flexible risers, umbilicals, steel risers, and mooring lines). This Zone Study allows reporting key results statistics (minimum and maximum values) extracted from quasi-static and dynamic analyses. A major asset is also to request for secondary outputs associated to a main one, for instance, the tension and curvature associated to the maximum angle...

  • Cyclic Load Cases: Cyclic Case Zone Study is appropriate for flexible and umbilical risers. This Zone Study type allows reporting fatigue loads at selected hot-spots along any riser. these fatigue loadings are typically extracted from dynamic analyses with regular waves. Outputs consist in minimum and maximum values of tension and local curvature (or deflection angle) projected along a selected bending axis. The outputs are intended to be used in a local analysis model to further derive alternated stress in the cross-section components and get the fatigue damage.

Handling Zones Study requests in the Model Browser

Zones Study post-processing requests display in the Model Browser. New Zones Study requests can be created by right-clicking the Zones Study folder and selecting either "New Extreme Zones Study" or "New Cyclic Zones Study" from the pop-up menu shown below.

Selecting the "Remove some studies" item opens a new dialog which allows deleting selected Zones Setudy requests from your model.

Selecting the "Generate all" item creates all batch processing files related with the Zones Studies included in your model.

Any Zones Study request may be Edited, deleted, renamed or copied by right- clicking the request from the Model Browser and selecting the corresponding item from the pop-up menu as illustrated below :

Batch commands files can be generated by clicking the "Generate Batch" menu item. This will create a text-based file that could then be read in batch mode by the GUI to produce the set of associated results.

Note

Zone Study requests can be imported/exported from one .DSK model file to another by using the Import/Export feature that is invoked from the Action bar.
