DNV 1981 Ed. Equivalent Stress

This code checks complies with Det Norske Veritas "Rules For Submarine Pipeline System", 1981 Ed.

The DNV 81' equivalent stress is defined as follows :

\[ DNV81Stress = \sqrt{\Bigl(\frac{N}{A} + \frac{0.85 \ldotp M}{W} \Bigr)^2 + \sigma \ldotp \frac{2}{y} - \Bigl(\frac{N}{A} + \frac{0.85 \ldotp M}{W} \Bigr) \ldotp \sigma_y} \]

where :

  • \(N\) = Axial force (including effect of water pressure)

  • \(A\) = Cross sectional area of pipe

  • \(M\) = Bending moment

  • \(W\) = Section modulus of pipe

  • \(\sigma_y\) = hoop stress
