Rigid bodies

Rigid body components behave like solids. These model components therefore provide a convenient way to link several objects together, as they can be connected with primary points of lines or any other structural model component that is available in your model.

These objects may be represented as user-defined surfaces or assembly of bar elements. Then, you may customize your rigid body depending on what you like to do. These model components can also be used to model contact with lines in your model.

Each rigid body is characterized by a number of data, which can be split as follows:

  • General data : to specify the name of your rigid body, the position of the origin expressed in the global coordinates system, and whether the rigid body is free, anchored or connected with another object from your model.

  • Drawing : to define all the geometrical parameters used to display the rigid body in the 3D view window.

  • Fairleads/Hang-off points : this defines fairleads and hang-off points linked to the Rigid body which can be used to connect other model components. Each fairlead and hang-off point is defined through its coordinates and built-in angle with respect to the Rigid body reference point. You may create as many fairleads and hang-off points as desired.

Note

Despite the "fairlead" and "hang-off" terms are generally used to refer to mooring lines connection and riser connection, this does not make any difference there. These points could be thought of as general purpose connection points to which any model component can be linked to.
