Winch Line External Fluid
The External fluid sheet defines the default external fluid to the line. The external fluid is used to derive the apparent weight (weight of pipe in external fluid) and the external pressure. The external pressure is then used during post-processing to calculate the true wall tension in rigid pipes and therefore impacts the calculation of stress.
You may define the external fluid data applicable to the line by doing either of the following:
-
Select "Use seawater as defined in the Sea & Ground component": This sets external fluid data identical to the seawater data defined in the Sea & Ground component. The external pressure profile along the whole line is then automatically derived by the FE engine based on the seawater density and the hydrostatic pressure equation.
-
Select "Use external fluid data defined in the table below": This defines external fluid data directly in the External fluid data sheet. Data to be input are similar to those of the External fluid type. Refer to the External fluid type for details on the data.
-
Select "Use external fluid data defined in external property": This assigns an existing External fluid type to the line. In this case, a selection box allowing you to choose the External fluid type name from the available items is presented instead of the edit boxes and table for property values.
Note
The external fluid type must exist before you can choose this option. If none exist, a message appears giving you the option to create one now.
Note
The external fluid defined in this sheet sets the default external fluid that is associated with the line. The default external fluid may be overwritten by any other existing external fluid type by specifying so in the Calculation parameters. This allows conveniently running multiple analyses with the same line while changing the external fluid.
