Winch Lines

A Winch Line is a line whose unstretched length is allowed to vary within series of static analyses or dynamic analyses in the time-domain.

The winch line data form includes the following tabs:

  • Structure: This tab defines the line arrangement, including sections and connection of primary section points to other model components. Segment line types can be assigned to segments in the line through this tab.

  • Internal fluid: This tab defines the steady state internal fluid data associated with the line.

  • Internal contents variation: This tab defines temperature profiles, internal fluid pressure profiles and additional weight profiles which may vary function of the quasi-static analysis steps or time. This can be used for instance to define pressure and temperature cyclic loadings, or slug travelling along the line.

  • External fluid: This tab defines external fluid data associated with the line. No data is to be input in this tab in case the external fluid is seawater as defined from the Sea and Ground component. Data input in this tab allows setting external fluid different from seawater (as required for instance with the inner pipe of pipe-in-pipe risers or pipelines).

  • Hydrodynamic properties: This tab defines specific hydrodynamic characteristics selected from the hydrodynamic database, such as drag coefficient function of Reynolds number or water depth. This feature is useful in case the default hydrodynamic properties defined in the Line Segment type are not used.

  • Winch: This tab defines a variable length for the line (pay-in or payout rate). The reference length may either changed during quasi-static or time-domain analysis. This feature allows to model cables connected to a winch.
